National Resources
Autism Society of America
Description: A national organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals on the autism spectrum through advocacy, education, and support. It provides a free online resource database and has a focus on the interactions between autistic individuals and the legal system through its Autism Justice Center.
National Autism Association (NAA)
Description: Focuses on safety and provides tangible resources to families and first responders. Key programs include the “Big Red Safety Box” to prevent wandering and the “Give A Voice” program which provides communication devices.
Organization for Autism Research (OAR)
Description: Focuses on applying research to solve the daily challenges faced by autistic individuals and their families.
Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN)
Description: An organization run by and for autistic people, focused on advancing the rights of the autistic community through a disability rights and systems change perspective.
Autism Speaks
Description: A major organization focused on advocacy, support, and increasing global understanding of autism. It provides extensive resources, including the “100 Day Kit” for newly diagnosed families and a large online Resource Guide to find local services.
Michigan-Wide Resources
Michigan Dept. of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Autism Program
Description: The central state agency that oversees autism services in Michigan, including the state’s Medicaid Autism Benefit which covers services like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
The Michigan ASD State Plan
Description: Michigan’s strategic roadmap for building a statewide infrastructure for comprehensive, lifespan supports for autistic individuals and their families.
The Michigan Autism Council
Description: A council appointed by the Governor that acts in an advisory capacity to monitor, update, and report on the progress of the ASD State Plan.
Statewide Autism Resources and Training (START) Project
Description: Funded by the Michigan Department of Education, this project provides evidence-based training, technical assistance, and resources to educators and families to support students with ASD in the public school system.
Autism Alliance of Michigan (AAoM)
Description: A statewide organization that helps families navigate services. Its MiNavigator Program provides professional help and answers for anyone touched by autism.
